A European Invention

A European Invention is a typographical exercise typesetting
Writings by Marguerite Duras with Orientalism by Edward Said
interjected throughout the text.
My first encounter with Marguerite Duras was through her novel,
The Lover, about a young French girl living in colonial Vietnam
who has a scandalous love affair with an older Chinese man. The
undeniably orientalist undertones of the story was something
that I wanted to critique through this assignment.
I started with a very traditional way of typesetting a book using
classical European looking typefaces and then gradually introduced
the Orientalism essay more and more until it eventually "colonized"
Duras' original text.
Thank You!
